Repairing LED lighting on Metabo, Scheppach, Einhell and many other power tools

How to repair the LED lighting on many power tools from Metabo, Scheppach, Einhell and other manufacturers for 3 €.

Repairing LED lighting on Metabo, Scheppach, Einhell and many other power tools

In my workshop I have a Metabo BAS261 bandsaw . For my applications, which are mainly limited to cutting panels for milling or lasering, this is sufficient. Unfortunately, the LED lighting on the saw table recently failed. Even though it’s not absolutely necessary (my workshop is excellently lit), I still like everything to be in working order.

The driver for the LED lighting is located in the upper part of the machine, behind the deflection pulley, and can be removed without taking out the pulley. Inside is a small driver with a switching power supply, and here the switching regulator is defective, which you can clearly see from the cracked housing.

During my research, I couldn’t find the original driver of type Cheetah 3720033 available, but I did discover that this driver is found in dozens of other stationary power tools. This driver not only powers LEDs, but also lasers in miter saws or drills.

Note: This is a repair where you’re handling potentially life-threatening mains voltage. So you should know what you’re doing and, if in doubt, better have a professional do it!

As a spare part from Metabo, the driver costs between 15 and 30 euros - depending on who can supply it at the time ( currently from Amazon for 16 € ). However, since the module seems to fail frequently, I wanted a different solution. This came in the form of a standard 3-watt LED driver, which you can get on Ebay and elsewhere for under 3 € .

It’s best to cut the cables of the old driver directly at the circuit board. The new driver could also be mounted with its own housing. However, since this can be opened easily and the actual driver electronics are tiny, you can also install them back into the original housing.

When soldering the LED connections, pay attention to the correct polarity and secure the circuit board in the housing with a good shot of hot glue if necessary. The repair takes 15 minutes and afterwards your machine will light up again.
